Why is Average Annual Aircraft Delay Compared to Scheduled Departure Time at MSP Important?

Delays at airports cost airlines and passengers both time and money. Annual delay often occurs when demand exceeds capacity and is an indicator of the adequacy of the facilities at MSP. Delays can also be caused by other factors like weather and construction projects. Delay can be reduced by airport and capacity improvements like the NextGen Air Traffic Management System. An increase in air traffic will increase delay and can be considered an indicator of increased demand for air service and a growing economy.

MnDOT does not have direct influence on flight delay. This measure is primarily driven by the activities of individual air carriers and Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The Metropolitan Airports Commission operations staff works with the airlines to safely respond to changing conditions (e.g., congestion, weather, operations incidents) that may affect on-time departure performance).
